Jen DiCandia opened NV Fitness & Training at 27 Main St. on April 5, bringing her passion for all things health and fitness to her hometown.
“The feedback and support has been out of this world,” she said. “The first month was everything I dreamt of and more, I am incredibly grateful.”
On a recent Monday, a group of children including DiCandia’s seven-year-old twin girls were seen laughing and enjoying a youth fit boot camp class led by Coach Erin Garceau, whom DiCandia said is her “right hand.” DiCandia smiled watching the kids moving their bodies and relishing the fun workout. DiCandia originally opened NV in 2006 in Worcester, where it was for almost 15 years before she decided to move it to Sterling to bring her “passion home.”
“2020 taught us all a lot about life, and with that I wanted to work closer to home and, in our hometown,” she said. DiCandia said they have one objective at NV – create the perfect fitness experience for clients, producing accelerated fat-loss, lean-muscle gain and “maximum results.” Since opening her gym in Sterling, DiCandia said they have been busy serving clients with classes and programs including youth and adult fit boot camps, personal training, semi-private training, and nutritional counseling.
“My husband remodeled the space, it is everything and more,” she said. “We are very busy, most classes are full on a daily basis. We are so grateful.”
She said that while it has not been ideal opening a business in the midst of a global pandemic, not only were they able to make it happen but it has been a great success.
“We navigate and pivot and will continue to do our best to offer programs in a safe and healthy manner,” DiCandia said. “Luckily, we are hopeful some of the restrictions will start to lighten up a bit soon.”
When asked what she enjoys most about owning and operating a business and being her own boss, DiCandia said being able to make her own schedule, one that works best for her.
“I love the flexibility and the ability to be present for my family,” she said.
She and her family moved to town five years ago. DiCandia said she is married to her “best friend,” Jamie, and besides their twin girls they also have a son who is nine.
“Our family is the center of my world,” she said.
DiCandia grew up in Webster, attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and moved to San Diego where she lived for 17 years before returning to the area and meeting her husband. She lost her younger brother to an overdose in 2010, a tragedy that sparked her mission to create awareness about addiction and substance abuse – something she has incorporated into her business.
“At NV, anyone in recovery with a sponsor can attend classes for free,” she said. “Exercise is incredibly powerful both mentally and physically.”
DiCandia said she is grateful for her clients, loyal and new ones, who are supporting her business during these challenging and unprecedented times.
“Thank you will never be enough,” she said. “This town rocks.”
