When Danielle Sargent received a candle-making kit from her husband Chris as a gift, little did they know, her hobby would quickly turn into an inspiring business. One not only loved by many locals, but also one which gives back to the community in numerous ways.
The Newfoundland Candle Company was birthed several months ago during a nighttime pour, while their two young Newfoundland pups, Chloe and Winnie lay at their feet. What began as pouring small batches of candles for family and friends quickly turned into setting up at local fairs and supplying inventory to local stores.
The candles, which come in over 30 different scents, are soy based, contain no harsh chemicals, are housed in mason jar containers made from recycled glass, and are 100% made in the U.S.A. Supporting and buying locally is very important to Danielle and Chris, and being able to produce a safe and affordable product for their customers is even higher on their priority list.
Not only did Chloe and Winnie serve as inspiration for the name and logo of the company, but also for the donations that are made each month. One intention of the company is to always give back. Therefore, each month a portion of the proceeds from each candle sale are donated to The Newfoundland Rescue of New England and the Sterling Animal Shelter.
Designing custom candles for local businesses, for wedding favors, and for local fundraising efforts are just a few of the qualities that make this candle company stand out from the others. The couple felt honored to not only be able to design a custom candle, but also to make a large donation for community member David Johnson’s cancer care. On September 12, they will be taking part in a fundraising event held by Save A Dog (a holistic minded humane society) at the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, where proceeds from the event will go to help serve the shelter.
Danielle, a nurse by day, has enjoyed perfecting the candle making process in her basement, which has served many purposes through the years. However, its latest transformation, into a retail shop, is a dream come true for her. Danielle has always dreamed of owning and operating an American-made artisan shop. Supporting local businesses is something she and Chris deeply believe in.
The new retail store location, which opened to the public on September 5, is located in the lower level of their Sterling home, at 229 Worcester Rd. The shop will be open on most weekends, unless they are offsite at an event, so be sure to check out their Facebook page to keep up to date on where they will be.
The shop will not only sell products by The Newfoundland Candle Company, but will also serve as retail space for other local and specialized artisans. Signs, jewelry, prism dream catchers, and soaps are just a few of the other affordable hand-crafted items being sold.
So, if you happen to be walking down Worcester Road and hear Chloe and Winnie barking a hello, stop in and peek at all the treasures being offered. In Danielle’s words, “We are looking forward to seeing what happens, it’s going to be fun!”
