Freedom was ringing loud in Sterling on July 4 this year, not only celebrating America’s birthday, but rejoicing in the ability to come together as a community again. With the past year and a half being a time where many were forced to distance themselves from extended family and friends, being able to gather again was a welcomed return to connecting as a community.
While this year’s Independence Day hosted many barbeques, parades, and firework displays across the state, East Waushacum Lake was hosting its first boat parade, which many are hoping becomes an annual tradition among not only the lake community, but all Sterling residents.
Lake Association Communications Director, Sue Valentine began presenting the idea of a boat parade to the lake community through email and social media efforts a few weeks before the holiday. The response was abundant, and residents got to work right away to create their vision for the big day. The inspiration behind the boat parade was, that after a tough year of being apart, the parade was an “opportunity to rebuild community” Valentine said, while bringing everyone together to be creative, have some fun and celebrate freedom.
Just under 10 pontoon and motorboats participated in the parade, which started at 4 p.m. and lasted for about an hour while each boat made a complete loop around the lake. Each boat was adorned with an array of various red, white, and blue attire, flags, festive buntings, dogs, and kids all showing American pride. One boat even had lady liberty herself standing at the helm.
Many folks, not on boats, took part in the celebration by watching and waving from the town beach. Shouts of “Happy Fourth of July” rang out while participating boats motored by.
Plans are already underway for next year’s parade, which won’t be open to just lake residents, but any Sterling resident who wishes to participate. And remember, if you don’t have a boat, the town beach is a great spot to hold a sign, give some cheers and enjoy the passing watercraft. Word has it that there may even be a visit from a special guest …Uncle Sam!
