With spring right around the corner, changing up the color of your front door is an awesome way to refresh the exterior of your home to get ready for the season! It’s also a small change that can make a huge impact when you’re updating your home (whether to sell or just because you feel like it) and truthfully what better time to update your home than the present? Before you get started, we’ve rounded up a few tips, tricks, and recommendations when it comes to changing the color of your front door.

Play it safe! If you like to keep it safe and neutral with your paint color choices, black is an absolute classic. A good option for a neutral black is Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore. Pair a black front door with white trim and a white or light gray exterior paint, and it’s simply stunning — but it will work well with almost any exterior color and trim.

Another super classic, but slightly bolder, choice for a front door is red. We absolutely love a red door with a black or dark gray exterior, but it also works well with a lighter or white exterior! A great recommendation for a classic front door red is Benjamin Moore’s Million Dollar Red.

Take a risk! If you’re not one of those people who likes to stick with safe color choices, a great pick for a bright and bold front door this season is turquoise! We recommend Wythe Blue or Breath of Fresh Air (both by Benjamin Moore)

If you’re looking for a truly timeless option, a naturally stained wooden door always wins. Our pick for this season is Crossroads, a medium-toned stain color by Sherwin Williams. Natural wood pairs well with a ton of historic exterior colors and keeps the outside of your house looking as beautiful as the day it was built!

Remember, when choosing a paint color for your door, you can of course choose any finish you like, but general wisdom says to go with a glossier finish. Glossy paints stand out and highlight the door as an architectural feature. They also stand up to chips, scrapes, and nicks better than a flatter or matte finish would, which helps them last longer.
